Event Description

Come hear about what students across the University are accomplishing; their experiences with fellowships and research; as well as how these opportunities fit into their broader academic experience.

Emily Ballantyne (BS Mechanical Engineering '17, Honors) & Ivy Koberlein (BS Biomedical Engineering '16, Honors)

Emily’s practical experience ranges from a large company summer internship at DEKA Research & Development, to a 6-month co-op with a medical device start-up, to academic research--most recently completing a 6-month co-op at Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile in Santiago on a Whitaker International Undergraduate Scholarship in 2014. Working under Dr. Daniel E. Hurtado, she assisted in the computational biophysics and biomechanics lab on a project aimed at quantifying lung strain using Finite Element Methods. Additionally, Emily is a DFO Student Ambassador and a student worker for the Drexel Fellowships Office.

Ivy will be graduating in June 2016 with a BS in Biomedical Engineering. She was aWhitaker International Undergraduate Scholarship to the Gambia where she worked on a solar suitcase and vaccine refrigeration project through Power Up Gambia. In the future, Ivy intends to integrate this and future experiences to develop affordable and comfortable prosthetic devices that satisfy the world's variety of needs. Ivy is also the Marketing Lead for Engineers Without Borders and a DFO Student Ambassador.

About Student Scholar Chats

Student Scholar Chats are a series of one-hour conversations with Drexel students and recent alumni who have successfully applied for nationally-competitive fellowships. The chats feature 1-2 students who present a brief, 10-15 minute overview of their fellowships experience, touching on the challenges, benefits, and impact of these experiences for their current and future work. This is followed by an informal Q&A discussion.

Student Scholar Chats are not an academic presentation or information session. Presenters may discuss some technical details of their research and findings, but conversations are meant to be more personal and provide a general overview of the students’ experiences with fellowships, research and/or creative projects at Drexel and beyond.
