Event Description
Talk: “Academic Makerspaces in Engineering
Education”
The national need for
improved STEAM education and the subsequent rise of the maker movement has
ushered in a new era of engineering education. The engineering profession needs
creative, diverse problem solvers able to work in multidisciplinary teams.
Recently, large open-area spaces that blend formal and informal learning, and
support academic, extracurricular, and personal design activities have begun to
appear in universities across the world. These "academic makerspaces"
are being used to form new "maker" cultures, which are engaged and
networked communities of practice united by entrepreneurial spirit and a
democratized approach to making and doing. In addition to their potential to
address the educational needs of the modern engineer, these active learning
common grounds hold promise to provide a reduced entry barrier to engineering,
and thus serve as a conduit for engineering outreach programs.
Dr. Terranova
is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the College of Engineering at Drexel
University. In his current role, he is the lead instructor for the freshman
engineering program, and oversees activities in the Innovation Studio, a
large-area academic makerspace.
Audience:
This event is open to

511: Foundations of Evidence-Based STEM Pedagogy, are welcomed to attend.
Pedagogical Happy
Hour is a monthly program hosted by the Center for the Advancement of STEM
Teaching and Learning Excellence (CASTLE) and sponsored by a grant from the
Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).The event offers a casual environment
for faculty to share ideas about STEM teaching and learning while enjoying
