Event Description Dr. Sandro Galea, MD, DrPH, Gelman Professor and Chair of Epidemiology Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, will present the Grand Round lecture “Trauma and the Mental Health of Global Populations”.
Dr. Galea is a physician and an epidemiologist whose primary research has been on the causes of mental disorders, particularly common mood-anxiety disorders and substance abuse, and on the role of traumatic events in shaping population health.
Mental disorders are a leading cause of disability worldwide. Mental, neurological, and substance use disorders account for 13% of the global burden of disease, surpassing both cardiovascular disease and cancer. Traumatic events are common experiences worldwide; the majority of persons worldwide will experience a traumatic event at some point in their life. In parts of the world where conflict is endemic, the prevalence of traumatic events is extraordinarily high. Traumatic events contribute to the development of mental disorders and, directly and indirectly to physical disorders. This presentation will discuss the contribution of traumatic event experience to global health broadly, with a focus on mental health.
The learning objectives of this discussion are:
1. To articulate the burden of mental disorders worldwide and the key drivers of these mental disorders
2. To describe the contribution of traumatic events to the burden of mental disorders worldwide
3. To propose approaches that can mitigate the adverse health consequences of trauma
Every academic year, Drexel University School of Public Health hosts Grand Rounds, a series of talks and discussions concerning local, national and international issues in public health practice and research.
