Event Description Drexel University’s Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering 2015 Engineering Alumni Lecture
Andrea L. Welker, PhD, PE Professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Villanova University Associate Director, Villanova Urban Stormwater Partnership
A Comparison of Stormwater Management Practices in Ireland and the United States
Low Impact Development (LID) or Green Infrastructure (GI) stormwater practices are gradually gaining acceptance in the United States. These practices are also being used to control stormwater in Ireland, where they are dubbed Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS). This talk will explore the innovative, sustainable techniques that are being used to restore the hydrologic cycle, which was disrupted by development, in both Ireland and in the Philadelphia area. This talk will draw upon the experiences and observations of the author during her sabbatical at the National University of Ireland – Galway.
Most of Dr. Welker’s research focuses on studying the geotechnical aspects of stormwater control measures (SCMs) including rain gardens and permeable pavements. Specifically, she has performed a side-by-side comparison of porous asphalt and pervious concrete and has examined many aspects of rain gardens including infiltration, evapotranspiration, soil mix designs, and the effect this type of SCM has on the water table.
This annual lecture is made possible by the generosity of Wesley O. Pipes and Jane Pipes. For further information, please contact Professor Charles N. Haas (haas@drexel.edu)
