Title: Dean's Seminar: The Trojan Horse of Whiteness: Black and Brown Communities, White Drug Offenders and Violence

Abstract: Research suggests that criminal offenders prefer to take advantage of opportunities in communities that resemble their own race and ethnicity. Yet, there are “victimless” crimes, such as drug buying and selling, whereby a non-ignorable share of incidents can be characterized by offenders traveling to neighborhoods that don’t reflect their own race and ethnicity. This is significant, considering that the most violent drug markets tend to be those with non-local buyers and sellers. Using data from Philadelphia, Lallen Johnson, PhD, will explore whether the commuting patterns of white drug offenders to drug markets in black and Latino neighborhoods add nuance to our understanding of market violence.

This event is free and open to the Drexel community. Light refreshments will be served.
