Event Description Amy Throckmorton, PhD, associate professor and director of the BioCirc Research Laboratory in the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems at Drexel University, will discuss how severe ventricular dysfunction due to congenital cardiac defects, myocarditis, and cardiomyopathy accounts for the majority of reported heart failures in the pediatric population. Mechanical blood pumps, either in the form of implantable or extracorporeal devices, have emerged as a promising therapeutic alternative to this growing and ongoing human health problem. The treatment objective is to augment cardiac output to a patient-specific and targeted level while minimizing damage to tissue or end-organs and providing a bridge-to-heart transplant or bridge-to-clinical recovery. As the utilization of blood pumps becomes more pervasive in the treatment of pediatric patients with acquired or congenital heart disease, critical advances in design features to address known limitations and the integration of novel technology become more urgent. In the Drexel BioCirc Research Lab oratory, we seek to improve treatment strategies and therapeutic options for pediatric patients by developing unique features for incorporation into the design of blood pumps and by devising entirely new product lines for patients having dysfunctional single or biventricular circulations. Our interdisciplinary team constitutes an ideal investigative group to carry out this line of research. We are currently focused on the design of a multitude of new therapeutic modalities for pediatric patients that involve a range of clinical treatment strategies from home therapeutic use to invasive implantation and implementation.
