This event is part of The Power of Inclusion Initiative – organized by the Student Center for Inclusion and Culture (SCIC)
The MLK Day of Dialogues consists of two student dialogues focused on race/racism and gender/sexism. These dialogues should bring about a deeper understanding of how race/racism and gender/sexism impact the lives of individuals and groups. The primary objective of the dialogues is to learn from others through sharing knowledge, perspectives and personal narratives in order to enhance participants' multicultural competency, communication skills, and interpersonal relationships.
The Real Talk-Race Dialogue facilitates intergroup learning by bringing together a racially diverse group of individuals to share their thoughts and emotions about race/racism in the United States. While the dialogue will allow participants to better understanding race, racism and racial identity on structural and institutional levels, the major focus will be on helping participants to explore their own racial identity on an individual level.
The Real Talk-Gender Dialogue facilitates intergroup learning by bringing together men and women to share their thoughts and feelings about gender, sexism, male-female identity and male-female relationships in the United States and globally. While the dialogue will allow participants to better understanding gender, gender identity and sexism on structural and institutional levels, the major focus will be on helping participants to explore their own gender identity on an individual level as it relates to sexism.
Both dialogues will help individuals better understanding their own obstacles for leading, understanding and communicating with diverse groups. While the dialogues will be focused on engaging participants in sharing their thoughts, emotions and experiences, skilled facilitators will manage the process by encouraging meaningful exchanges and thoughtful, constructive conflict.
