Event Description
The Africana Studies program at Drexel, in cooperation with several departments at the University of Pennsylvania, will host Sybrina Fulton (mother of Trayvon Martin; co-founder of the Trayvon Martin Foundation), Jasiri X (Emcee and community activist), and Bakari Kitwana (Rap Sessions director) in a discussion that will examine how this generation of black youth are still at risk of tragedy at the hands of the State, decades after the Civil Rights Movement.
It will also examine how the more recent murders of youth are similar or different from the murders of Emmitt Till and the four black girls who were victims of the 16th Street Birmingham Baptist Church bombing in 1963 (Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson and Denise McNair). This event will also look for solutions and healing, most especially for the youth of this country.
Please note: This event will be taking place at the University of Pennsylvania (Irvine Auditorium – 3401 Spruce Street).
As co-sponsors of this event, we encourage the Drexel community to join with the University of Penn, as well as the community at large, to reflect on a major issue that the United States is collectively facing.
Drexel co-sponsors: The College of Arts and Sciences and the Africana Studies program
