Title: Cloning the Cooperative: Oranges, Genetics, and the Global Circulation of California

Speaker: Dr. Tiago Saraiva, assistant professor of history

In the early twentieth century, geneticists converted California orange growers into innovative horticulturalists organized by cooperatives.  As California grew ripe with citrus orchards and Los Angeles assumed the role of “Mediterranean Eden,” similar operations cropped up all over the world—as did their labor and racial relations.

By tracing the trajectories of geneticists and their scientific artifacts, Dr. Tiago Saraiva will highlight the transnational nature of the cooperative experience, unveiling an early version of global California, and a new understanding of the United States' presence throughout the world.

This event is free and open to the Drexel community. Light refreshments will be served.
