Philosophy Colloquium: "How Terrorism Complicates Just War Theory" with Dan Casey
Start Date: 1/25/2018Start Time: 4:00 PM
End Date: 1/25/2018End Time: 5:30 PM
Event Description
For many years, just war theory has provided a framework for moral judgments concerning the proper grounds for both entering a war and conducting a war once initiated. This framework largely takes for granted that those conducting wars will be nation states. However, modern warfare has devolved in the direction of asymmetric warfare conducted by nation states against insurgent groups often categorized as being terrorists. In this lecture, we will examine the complications that this presents to just war theory and whether, indeed, that theory remains useful in guiding our moral judgements concerning warfare.
