Event Description

Exhibition from January 10, 2014 through March 14, 2014. Every painter begins with a blank canvas, but not this one. The featured artist of the exhibition — “Simulated Fijnschilderij: Where Old Masters and Technology Meet” — began with a digital print and some very old recipes.

Rosalind Sutkowski’s work brings a technological twist to a genre favored by 17th century Dutch painters known as fijnschilderij, or “fine art.” Whereas the Dutch masters created paintings that had the illusion of reality, Sutkowski’s creations start with reality (a photograph) and create the illusion of a painting. “By recycling imagery and leaving segments of the pieces with very thin glazes I subtly expose the photographic process,” Sutkowski says of her work. “My intentions are to re-create the experience of looking at a traditional illusionistic painting, but then enabling the viewer to discover a clue that allows them to see the image in a new dimension.”
