Title: How Does it Sound or What Does it Mean: Investigating the Origins of Language-Learning Difficulties in Down Syndrome
Down syndrome is the most common genetic cause of intellectual disability. In addition to global learning difficulties, it is often accompanied by profound language weaknesses that limit complex verbal expression and comprehension. This talk will describe research that seeks to dissect language-learning difficulties in Down syndrome. Specifically, it contrasts whether processing the sounds or the meanings of words are more difficult for youth with Down syndrome. It also begins to explore the possible neural bases of these language difficulties by describing research on the developing brain in Down syndrome using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
