Title: The Social System of Wild White-Bellied Spider Monkeys in the Amazonian Forest: Insights from Long-Term Observations and Molecular Data


Spider monkeys are some of the largest and longest lived New World monkeys, and they share many features of social organization with African chimpanzees and, presumably, early hominins. In this talk, I will give an overview of the social system of wild white-bellied spider monkeys based on my research team's long-term field work in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Additionally, I discuss what we can learn about difficult to observe aspects of spider monkey social biology, like mating skew and dispersal patterns, from genetic analysis of noninvasively collected fecal samples.
