Event Description Speaker: Angela Douglas, PhD, Department of Entomology, Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Cornell University BEES Graduate Seminar: The Multi-Organismal Animal: How the Resident Microbiota Shapes Animal Phenotype
Abstract: Animals are chronically infected by microorganisms that are benign or beneficial, with accumulating evidence that many aspects of animal function are the product of coevolution with resident microorganisms. Our recent studies on insect-microbial interactions underpinning nutrition reveal metabolic coevolution and a defining role of the microbiota in the regulation of nutrient allocation. These insights into the multi-organismal insect can be harnessed both for insect biomedical models and novel strategies for insect pest control.
