Event Description
Richard Bierregaard, PhD, Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University

BEES Graduate Research Seminar: "Satellite telemetry Studies of Ospreys: Migration, Mortality, and Foraging"

Abstract: Since 2000, Rob Bierregaard has tagged 45 juvenile and 34 adult Ospreys from South Carolina to northern New Hampshire. His data provide insights into how juvenile Ospreys learn to navigate between their natal territories and wintering grounds, how juveniles settle into wintering areas and prospect for breeding territories, and where and when adults and juveniles are most vulnerable in the migration cycle. The latest upgrade in technology, providing minute-by-minute GPS locations throughout the day, enables detailed analyses of foraging behavior and flight strategies during migration.
