Event Description "Commodities Metropolis: Environment, Technology, Markets, and the Making of São Paulo”
10-day, 1.0-credit course with Tiago Saraiva, PhD, March 20-29, 2015
This 10-day study tour explores the making of São Paolo, South America’s most vibrant metropolis, through the lens of commodities. Students will be exposed to five main ecosystems: Landscapes (coffee plantations, orange orchards); Laboratories (genetics, chemistry); Industry (ABC region, automakers); Logistics (port, dedicated terminals); Exchange (futures and commodities), the building blocks of the urban dynamics that made São Paolo the economic hub of South America. For 10 full days, students will be exploring these key sites of the São Paulo metropolitan area and its hinterland to unveil the role of commodities in growing the largest city in the southern hemisphere and the seventh largest city in the world.
