Event Description Guglielmo Marconi was an Italian inventor and electrical engineer, known for his pioneering work on long-distance radio transmission and for his development of Marconi’s law and a radio telegraph system. He is often credited as the inventor of radio, and he shared the 1909 Nobel prize in physics with Karl Ferdinand Braun “in recognition of their contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy.” On the occasion of the 140 years of Guglielmo Marconi, PI-Philly Italian Professionals in Philadelphia, Drexel University and The Consul General of Italy in Philadelphia would like to dedicate to him one day of celebrations. The event will consist in a symposium on the communications technology: yesterday, today and tomorrow.
There will be three main sessions as part of the event. All events are free and open to the public.
2:30 p.m. Radio Waves: A live demonstration of wireless telegraphy with Drexel Amateur Radio Club and Associazione Radioamatori Italiani (Venice, Italy), with the participation of Drexel IEEE Graduate Forum
4:00 p.m. Back to the Future: Scientific and technological session on the new era of wireless technology with Dr. Kapil Dandekar (Professor Drexel University) and Dr. Emiliano Miluzzo (AT&T)
5:45 p.m. Reception
6:30 p.m. The Man and the Myth: Marconi’s History and Legacy, featuring Calvin D. Trowbridge Jr. (biographer) on Marconi’s history; Dr. Frederic Bertley (VP of Science and Education, The Franklin Institute) on 1918, The Franklin Medal to Marconi; Dr. Ted Grauch (VP of Video Premise Equipment, COMCAST) on how cable technology enables the use of wireless technology; and a video contribution from Fondazione e Museo Marconi (Bologna, Italy) |
