The Business of Amateurs: A Documentary About College Athletes Made by College Athletes

Event Description
The Drexel Department of Sport Management is pleased to host a screening of the film entitled The Business of Amateurs, a documentary for college athletes made by college athletes. The screening will be held on Tuesday, October 20 at 6 pm in the URBN Center Annex at 3401 Filbert Street.

The film explores the contradictions that exist in the world of big-time college sport raising questions and concerns regarding the treatment of college athlete. Among the issues touched upon in the film include athlete rights, access to education, fair compensation, workplace safety, and medical care and coverage.   The Business of Amateurs is the first documentary that challenges the NCAA from the perspective of former college athletes.

The program will begin with an introduction of the film by producer and director, Bob DeMars, a former University of Southern California (USC) football player. Following from that DeMars will participate in a panel discussion along with:
 
Andrew Brandt, J.D., Director, Moorad Center for Sports Law, Villanova University Law School.   A former NFL executive, Brandt is an NFL Business Analyst with ESPN who has appeared on "Outside the Lines",  "Sports Center",  and "NFL Live". 
 
Jason Lanter, Ph.D., Associate Professor & Faculty Athletics Representative, Kutztown State University. Lanter is a past president of the Drake Group and a current member of the College Athletes Rights & Empowerment – Faculty Coalition (CARE-FC) and a former athletic academic advisor.

Mary Willingham, former University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill athletic academic advisor who blew the whistle on academic fraud there. She is co-author of Cheated: The UNC Scandal, the Education of Athletes, and the Future of Big-Time College Sports.

Eric Zillmer, Ph.D., Director of Athletics and Carl R. Pacifico Professor of Neuropsychology at Drexel University in Philadelphia. Now in his 18th year as Director of Athletics, Dr. Zillmer oversees all components of the Athletics Department, which provides recreational opportunities and programming for over 25,000 students and 6,000 faculty and professional staff.

Ellen J. Staurowsky, Ed.D
., Professor, Drexel University. Staurowsky is a leading expert on college sport issues, serving as an expert witness on behalf of the plaintiffs in the historic case of O’Bannon v. NCAA. She is the co-author of College Athletes for Hire: The Evolution and Legacy of the NCAA Amateur Myth, editor and lead author of the forthcoming Women in Sport: From Liberation to Celebration, and lead author of a work in progress entitled College Athletes, Labor, and the Academy.
