The importance of the chelate and macrocyclic effects in stabilizing transition metal complexes was first The Power of Chelate and Macrocyclic Effects in Supramolecular Chemistry realized in the mid-20th century. While these influences have been most intensely studied for transition metal coordination, many researchers in supramolecular chemistry (which was conceived several decades later) have noted striking similarities to transition metal coordination in these non-covalent host-guest associations. To illustrate some of these “coincidences,” the binding and structure of anion complexes with mixed amide/amine and urea/amine chelate and macrocyclic complexes will be discussed. Additional chemistry, including examples of transition metal analogies, will also be briefly described.
