The ANA-POGIL Project; The Development and Assessment of POGIL Materials for Analytical Chemistry

A consortium of analytical faculty members involved in curriculum development and chemical education research were awarded a TUES Type 2 NSF grant to develop instructional materials for analytical chemistry based on the POGIL (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning) model (www.pogil.org). In this project, classroom activities were developed by several authors and then peer-reviewed by members of the consortium. These materials cover content in six fundamental areas of analytical chemistry: spectroscopy, separations, equilibrium, electrochemistry, statistics, and analytical tools. The strategies used for executing the ANA-POGIL project were aligned with what is known about designing materials for sustained adoption. For instance, the ANA-POGIL materials are modular; they can be used in traditional analytical courses or any course that includes analytical chemistry principles. Classroom-testing took place at a wide range of institutions, leading to further revisions and the development of classroom implementations strategies. The efficacy of these materials was assessed at numerous institutions, including an analysis of student content mastery, process skill development, and student attitudes. An overview of the project will be presented, including examples of activities, implementation and assessment strategies, and outcomes.
