Topic: Ethical Perspectives on Breastfeeding, Milk Sharing, and Milk Banks
Discussion Leader: Amy Henderson Riley, CHP DrPH Candidate The World Health Organization recommends initiating breastfeeding within one hour of birth and exclusively breastfeeding for up to six months of age. For various reasons, however, some women are unable to breastfeed and meet these recommendations. For centuries, generous women have served as wet nurses, shared breastmilk, and supported mothers and families unable to breastfeed their infants. In today's electronic era, breastmilk is often donated online. But what are the ethics of charging for breastmilk and paying women for this "service"? Should sharing breastmilk be seen as solely an altruistic endeavor? This first MCH Journal Club of the 2015-2016 academic year will be moderated by Amy Henderson Riley, a doctoral candidate in the CHP department, teaching assistant, and curriculum coordinator under the HRSA MCH Catalyst Program Grant.Two guest faculty from the CHP department will be onhand to answer questions and lend their expertise tothe discussion: Jennifer Breaux, DrPH and John Rossi,VMD. All participants will be expected to read the article before the meeting to ensure meaningful discussion.
