Event Description

The Women’s and Gender Studies and Africana Studies programs, and the Department of Global Studies and Modern Languages present:

Voting on the Brink: Gender, Race and Citizenship in a Divided America (Inaugural event of the Global Passport Series – GPS)

The Drexel community and the public are invited to participate in an open conversation concerning the presidential candidate’s platforms, and the potential global-to-local consequences of voting, or not voting, for diverse American communities. This open and candid conversation will be preceded by contextual remarks from a diverse panel of activists and scholars working in electoral politics, who will share their experiences and expertise. This event will highlight the rights and concerns of marginalized peoples, identities, and communities of the United States, especially those who identify as women, black, LGBTQA+, disabled/people with disabilities, Asian American and/or Latina/o/x, as it pertains to this election.

In a recent Pew Research Center (PRC) poll, voter satisfaction with the presidential candidates (43% leaning Democrat and 40% leaning Republican) is at its lowest levels in decades. According to the PRC, over 40% of voters say it is difficult to choose between Clinton and Trump because they believe that neither would make a good president. (For context, Obama’s campaigns registered satisfaction among Democrat leaning at 72% and 64% respectively. McCain and Romney registered levels among Republicans leaning of 47% and 52% respectively.)

Given this apathy for the candidates, the disunity in the major parties, and global to local instability, the implications of November 8  are understandably uncertain. A presidential candidate will lose, that is for certain, but can the people win?

Students are strongly encouraged to attend, especially first-time voters.

Professors, full classes can be accommodated.
