Event Description Drexel University will host the exhibit The Power of Civil Society: the Fate of Jews in Bulgaria During the Holocaust, 1940 – 1944 from November 6 – December 5, 2013 at the University’s W. W. Hagerty Library. An opening reception will be held on Wednesday, November 6th.
The exhibit showcases photographs, personal letters and text, which are arranged chronologically on panels that tell the complex story of the Holocaust in Bulgaria. Specifically, the exhibit details how the Bulgarian people refused Germany’s demands to surrender their Jewish neighbors and in doing so saved most of the country’s 50,000 Jews from concentration camps.
By 1944, it became clear that Bulgaria was not aligned with the axis powers and declared war on the Third Reich. Over 30,000 Bulgarian soldiers were killed fighting the Nazis during this last phase of the war.
The exhibition is on loan from the Republic of Bulgaria’s Institute for Culture. |
