Math Colloquium: Applications of Inverse Mean Curvature Flow to General Relativity
Start Date: 10/31/2018Start Time: 3:00 PM
End Date: 10/31/2018End Time: 4:00 PM

Event Description

Brian Allen, United States Military Academy

Abstract: Inverse mean curvature flow (IMCF) is a geometric evolution equation which was introduced by Robert Geroch for the purpose of proving the Riemannian Penrose inequality (RPI), an important result in general relativity. Almost 30 years later, Huisken and Illmanen introduced novel ideas to defi ne weak solutions of IMCF in order to prove the RPI in the general case using the ideas laid out by Geroch. In this talk we will introduce IMCF, discuss the history of its applications to general relativity, and talk about the author's recent work on using IMCF to prove geometric stability theorems in mathematical relativity.
