Event Description
BIOMED Seminar

Title:
Interdisciplinary Approaches to Precision Medicine

Speaker:
Rose Ann DiMaria-Ghalili, PhD, RN, CNSC, FASPEN, FAAN
Professor
College of Nursing and Health Professions
Drexel University

Details:
The talk will demonstrate the importance of merging biomedical engineering knowledge with clinical expertise to advance Precision or personalized Medicine. The National Institutes of Health defines Precision Medicine, “as an emerging approach for disease prevention and treatment that takes into account people’s individual variations in genes, environment, and lifestyle”. This approach to disease management focuses on tailoring interventions and treatments to individuals rather than a one-size-fits all approach, using methods, such as digital health technologies and non-invasive monitoring with sensors for various acute and chronic conditions. Key interdisciplinary elements of precision medicine highlighting technologies developed at Drexel University, which include the SmartCup, Low-Frequency Low-Intensity Ultrasound Therapy, and Diffuse Correlation Spectroscopy, will be reviewed.

Biosketch:
Dr. DiMaria-Ghalili blends her passion for nursing, team science, the older adult, nutrition, and chronic disease into a strong body of research which impacts practice. DiMaria-Ghalili’s efforts are recognized nationally across disciplines (nursing, nutrition, medicine, gerontology and engineering) and contexts (research, practice, and policy).

DiMaria-Ghalili's research focuses on the impact of nutrition on recovery, quality of life, and health outcomes in older adults with acute (e.g., cardiac surgery) and chronic (e.g., heart failure, chronic wounds) conditions across the care continuum. Acknowledging the need to improve the measurement of nutritional intake, DiMaria-Ghalili led a team of engineers on the research and development of a wireless device to track and monitor fluid intake. She is lead inventor for this innovative patented device.
