Event Description
Urban Resilience Planning: How can cities effectively address climate risks?

Are you interested in a research opportunity – or just in studying - in Venice, Italy? Or, are you interested in urban resilience and climate change? Professor Franco Montalto of the Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering Department at Drexel and Professor Francesco Musco of the Department of Planning from the IUAV University of Venice, Italy will host an information session to discuss upcoming opportunities for studying urban resilience planning in both Philadelphia and Venice. This session is on Wednesday, October 14th at 4:00 PM in the Hill Seminar Room, Lebow Engineering Building Room 240 and is open to all who are interested in this collaboration.

Opportunity for all students (undergraduate and graduate):

Three, 3-credit courses will be offered in a 6 week period in Venice, Italy, during the summer of 2016 (6/20-7/29). The three classes are: CIVE 564 Sustainable Water Resource Engineering, ENVE 571: Environmental Life Cycle Assessment and ENVE 865: Benefit Cost Analyses for Environmental Systems. Students will work on one integrated project that will involve sustainable urban water resource planning in Venice, and the surrounding region. The project will represent an opportunity for students to apply concepts and use tools learned in the classroom activities. Students will also go on field trips to see local innovative natural wastewater treatment systems, Venice’s multi-billion dollar storm surge barrier, ancient fish farms and river diversion projects, present day beach nourishment and habitat restoration projects, and will learn how those living in Venice have adapted to life in a dynamic lagoon facing a changing climate. Students must complete an application through the Drexel Study Abroad application to be considered for this opportunity.

Opportunity for Masters and Doctoral Students:

Drexel and IUAV are recipients of an Erasmus-Plus Mobility Grant which will enable research exchanges between the two universities. Drexel will be able to send two (2) Masters students to Venice for 6 months of research, one (1) Doctoral student for 3 months of research, one (1) Drexel faculty member for a 12 day period of teaching. All of the exchanges will occur between January 2016 and June 2017, and include a travel stipend. During this same period, Drexel will host IUAV faculty and students as well.

Please attend the information session to learn more about these opportunities.
