Event Description

Join us for special programming during the opening weekend of our new exhibit, Reptiles: The Beautiful and the Deadly.

Special Opening Weekend programming:

Meet a Keeper!

Starting Saturday, October 3, meet the Clyde Peeling's Reptiland keeper in charge of taking care of the animals in our Reptiles exhibit. Talks will take place each Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday at 11:45 a.m.

Reptile Conservation

Did you know that you can help save reptiles at home and abroad by taking simple small steps in your daily life? Many species, both endangered and common, need our help to survive. Learn ways you can make their (and your) world a better place.

Local Herps and Venomous Snakes

What have we here? Lizards and turtles and snakes! Pennsylvania and the surrounding areas are home to a wide variety of cool reptiles. Find out what reptiles might be living in your own backyard! Learn about the venomous snakes that may live in the area and how we can all live in harmony.

Reptile Crafts

Make your own reptile craft to take home. Create a chameleon headband and play a sticky tongue game and gecko grabber game!

Reptile Roundup

Using biofacts and hands-on models, learn what makes a crocodile different from an alligator, a turtle different from a tortoise, and a snake different from a lizard. Discover what makes a reptile a reptile!

ScaleTales

Find out more about the main similarity of all reptiles, their keratin covering. Get info on what scales are made of, compare scales, scutes, and osteoderms under the microscope, and check out different kinds of reptiles’ scales.

Auditorium Shows:

Rad Reptile Relatives: Dandy Dinos and Bodacious Birds

11 a.m.
The most popular reptiles are actually extinct: dinosaurs! And even though they have been gone for millions of years, their legacy lives on in their closest relatives, birds. Learn about reptiles though the ages, and meet some live animals as you explore how birds are related to reptiles.

Reptile Dinner Party

1 p.m.
Are reptiles sitting at the table or sitting on the plate? Actually, both! Reptiles can be omnivores, carnivores, or herbivores. But did you know that other animals think reptiles are a tasty treat, too? Meet some live animals that might be predators or prey if they met a reptile at a dinner party!

Fur, Feathers, and Scales

3 p.m.
Animals come in a variety of coverings. Learn about the similarities and differences they have in this live animal presentation as you are introduced to some furry, feathery, and scaled Academy ambassadors!
