Details:
This seminar will review the definitions, policies and resources relevant for academic conduct and research ethics. Drexel's policies and their implementation in the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems, as well as the School's own policies, will be explained. These policies affect all faculty, students, staff, and any Biomed community members.

Biosketch:
Andres Kriete, PhD, is Associate Director of Graduate Studies and Academic Operations in the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems at Drexel University. He received training in computational biology in academic, clinical and industrial environments and joined Drexel University in 2003. His research interests include cell aging, skin cancer, computational modeling, aging pathways, and is a collaborating partner in the Aging Initiative at Drexel University College of Medicine.

John F. Domzalski, MPH, JD, is an Adjunct Professor in the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems, Drexel University. He has held a range of executive and senior leadership positions in public health and was the Health Commissioner for the City of Philadelphia from February, 2002 until his retirement from government service in July, 2005. He received his Juris Doctor degree from Temple University School of Law and his Master of Public Health degree from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. Since July, 2005, he has worked in Southeast Texas providing hurricane disaster relief lectured to Foreign Service Nationals from Africa, East Asia, Europe, and the Near East on public health topics, and served as a panelist for the Public Broadcast Service global health series, Rx for Survival. He has taught in the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems for many years and won awards for his course on Biomedical Ethics and Law. He is currently teaching Biomedical Ethics and Law and Health Care Administration.

Stacey Ake, PhD, is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of English and Philosophy at Drexel University. Her areas of research in philosophy are semiotics (Peirce, Percy), existentialism (Kierkegaard), existential ethics (Bonhoeffer), and theology (Chesterton, Derrida, MacDonald, Zizek). Her interests in biology include population genetics, evolutionary theory, and the co-evolution of bacterial pathogenicity and human immune response. Dr. Ake's interstitial interests include biosemiotics (Deacon, Emmeche, Hoffmeyer, Seboek, von Uexkull), the creation of a lived or existential philosophy of mind as found at the intersection of neuroscience and psychology (Damasio, Edelman, Ramachandran, Sacks), and the elucidation of a realetik vis-a-vis the biological and metabiological natures of human reality.

Jay Bhatt, MS, is the Information Services Librarian (Engineering) in the W.W. Hagerty Library at Drexel University. He is responsible for building library collections in engineering subject areas, outreach to faculty and students, and teaching information and research skills to faculty and students in Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and related subject areas. He provides individual and small group consultations to students, instructional sessions to specific classes, online research support in both face to face and distance learning programs, and workshops for specialized research areas. Jay is actively involved with the Engineering Libraries Division of the American Society for Engineering Education. He experiments with innovative applications of web 2.0 to enhance information awareness among faculty and students. Jay has published and presented papers extensively in the area of information literacy for engineering students.

Stephen Rupprecht, MA, is Assistant Dean in the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards at Drexel University. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Oswego State University and a Master of Arts degree in College Student Personnel from Bowling Green State University. In his over 16 years in higher education, he has served as a Resident House Director, Assistant Director of Leadership and Service Programs, Director of Greek Life, Director of Campus Activities and Assistant Dean for Fraternity & Sorority Life. He currently serves as the Assistant Dean for Student Conduct and Community Standards and is the University's Chief Conduct Officer for the University City and Center City Campuses. Stephen is a member of the Association of Student Conduct Administrators and is a decorated past member of the Association of Fraternity Advisors having served two years on their executive board and 13 years in various leadership and committee roles.
