Julija Šukys, PhD, assistant professor of creative writing, University of Missouri
The Judaic Studies Program and the Department of English and Philosophy present “The Life of a Vilna Ghetto Rescuer: Reading, Writing, Remembering,” a lecture and book-signing by Julija Šukys, PhD, assistant professor of creative writing, University of Missouri.
Please join writer Julija Šukys for a reading and discussion of her recent book "Epistolophilia: Writing the Life of Ona Šimaitė." Šimaitė, herself a librarian, carefully collected, preserved and archived the written record of her life. In her book, Šukys beckons back to life this Lithuanian heroine, close friend of leading Vilna Jews, who saved lives, managed to survive and was later honored as one of Yad Vashem’s Righteous Among the Nations. In her talk, Šukys will chart the compelling development of her own identity in tandem with her uncovering of Šimaitė’s amazing life.
