The Joe Bonham Project
Start Date: 10/29/2013 All Day
End Date: 11/11/2013

Event Description
In late October, Hahnemann Library will showcase illustrations from the Joe Bonham Project, a series of portraits of wounded US servicemen created at military hospitals around the country. The Joe Bonham Project represents efforts of wartime illustrators to document the struggles of U.S. service personal undergoing rehabilitation after traumatic front-line injuries.

The Project will be on display Tuesday, October 29th through Tuesday, November 12th and an opening event will be held on Tuesday, October 29th at 6:30 PM.

The Project was formed in 2011 and is the work of Mike Fay, a retired US Marine and combat artist, and several of his colleagues. The Project takes its name from the central character in Johnny Got his Gun, the 1938 novel by Dalton Trumbo which centers on a World War I solder who is unable to communicate with the outside world due to the extent of his wartime injuries.

The Joe Bonham Project was brought to Drexel University through the Great Works Symposium for 2013 – 2014. The theme of the symposium for this academic year is Media: Past, Present and Future and the fall course is titled Imaging War. The course will include classes on the history of war photography, the role of television and film in portraying war, video games and war, the way we remember war and a class on combat art. Mike Fay, creator of the Joe Bonham Project, will lecture at one of the classes.
