Event Description The recent evolution in 3D printing offers a platform to replicate and simulate the structural features of biological tissues. Through combining materials and structural design principles, such as hierarchy, gradient, heterogeneity, anisotropy and suturing one can create tissues with specialized functions.
With prototypes produced by multi-material 3D printing, we will be able to de-convolute and test each nano- or microscale parameter at a much larger scale. For example, “Bouligand structure” is a ubiquitous feature in all arthropod exoskeletons. It is characterized by gradually rotating chitin micro fibers, reinforced by calcium phosphate mineral nanoparticles. Variations in fiber packing density and degree of mineralization provide a large avenue to tune the modulus while maintaining material ductility. With 3D printed prototypes, we will be able to quantitatively probe the significance of each structural factor. As a result, we expect to achieve an optimized Bouligand structure-inspired material design via this new “bottom-up” approach.

These events are part of a series of discussions. The 3D at Drexel initiative engages experts, information-savvy librarians, and highlights research activities around campus to explore this media and help foster core information skills among students.
Drexel University Libraries identifies a core interdisciplinary role supporting learning, teaching, and research throughout our University. Recognizing that independent efforts utilizing 3D technologies to image, design, and print 3D objects are rapidly being considered and developed throughout the campuses, the Libraries fosters opportunities for dialog and collaboration among faculty with development of a program to explore 3D literacies in support of the DSLPs for Information Literacy and for Technology Use.
