New Directions for Healthcare Technology and Their Impact on Biomedical and Clinical Engineering
Start Date: 11/7/2014Start Time: 4:00 PM
End Date: 11/7/2014End Time: 5:30 PM

Event Description
James P. Keller, Jr., vice president of health technology evaluation and safety at ECRI Institute Headquarters, will discuss how healthcare technology is undergoing a wide range of transformations. This includes how medical devices and systems are evolving (in design and capabilities), how they are used, the many new settings and applications for their use, how they are supported and managed, and how they are regulated. Medical devices are becoming more computerized and more complex. Discrete devices are rapidly moving towards becoming part of large interconnected systems. These systems provide a bi-directional information exchange and produce a tremendous amount of data that can have a major impact on patient care, with effective analytics and decision support. This presentation will review the major changes that are happening with healthcare technology and how those changes will affect the future of the biomedical and clinical engineering professions. It will provide perspectives for changes that biomedical and clinical engineering professions must make to best prepare for these transformations. The presentation will also review how ECRI Institute monitors and evaluates healthcare technology and supports healthcare organizations with tactical and strategic planning for their technologies.
