“Chemical Modification Approaches for Intercalation Electrode Materials with Advanced Performance”

Novel solutions are needed to transform current energy storage technology to more efficient performance and lower cost. One way to achieve this goal is to develop intercalation based metal-ion batteries, operating due to the reversible insertion/extraction of ions other than lithium, such as sodium and magnesium ions. Systems beyond lithium require synthesis of new electrode materials with facilitated diffusion of the charge carrying ions in the crystal structure of the host. Such improvement of ionic conductivity should result in better performance of electrodes at higher current rates. To achieve this goal, we develop chemical approaches that result in the improved performance of materials known to reversibly intercalate metal ions through the modification of materials composition and structure. The approaches are based on the chemical pre-intercalation of charge carrying ions and post-synthesis modification, including chemical treatment, hydrothermal treatment and annealing. In this work, we will present the effect of electrode materials modification on their electrochemical performance in metal-ion batteries with the focus on lithium-ion and sodium-ion systems.
