Building Confidence with Public Health Data
Start Date: 11/19/2015Start Time: 9:00 AM
End Date: 11/19/2015End Time: 12:30 PM

Event Description
In many public health departments and community organizations, data expertise is concentrated in a few key staff, while those responsible for using data for planning and decision making lack the skills necessary to take this data to the next level. With an increasing focus on evidence-based and data-driven policies and practices, there is a growing demand to understand how to apply and interpret data across disciplines.

This workshop, taught by veteran Drexel professors, Dr. Ed Gracely and Dr. Mary Hovinga, will be for public health professionals with a basic knowledge in statistics seeking to build confidence in their ability to run tests with statistical software, interpret the results, and analyze reports.

We will assume you have encountered and are familiar with ideas like p values, confidence intervals, relative risks, and basic descriptive statistics. You should also be familiar with the topics of study design, causality, and confounding. The statistical part of the session will focus on the free statistical package Epi Info, and will generate results incorporating these basic statistical methods.

Please contact Ellie Lippmann if you have any questions about the skill level or content.

This hybrid course will consist of a half day in person training on Epi Info (a free software) and interpreting data from both academic and media articles. A short take-home assignment will be given at the in person session. This assignment and the questions it generates will be discussed online through Blackboard Collaborate.  Dates for the one hour live online follow-up training will be supplied through the registration link.

Who should attend?
Public health professionals from local, state, and federal health department/agencies, community based organizations, physicians, nurses, social workers, and health educators.
