Reframing an Icon: Leonardo's 'Virgin of the Rocks' Philly's Quincentennial Leonardo Celebration

End Date: 11/1/2019End Time: 8:00 PM

Event Description

Artist. Inventor. Scientist. Thinker.

In the 500 years since his death, the fascination with Leonardo da Vinci’s genius has not diminished. His artistic works, in particular, have been analyzed in every imaginable way, supposedly unearthing everything from weirdly occult messages to deeply traditional religious ideas. He held painting to be the supreme expression of his hard-earned knowledge of the world, and engaged disciplines as diverse as anatomy, geology, optics, and mathematics in its realization.

Drexel University joins with museums and cultural institutions around the world in the year-long celebration of da Vinci’s life and work, with an evening celebrating the Renaissance master and Italian culture. Enjoy a reception featuring Italian food, wine and desserts, remarks from the Italian Consulate of Philadelphia and a talk with Drexel art historian, Joseph Gregory, PhD, as he unveils his radically new analysis of one of the artist’s most iconic works, "Virgin of the Rocks" (Paris, Louvre)--a contribution to Leonardo scholarship that is bound to stir things up in the global arena of Leonardo studies.

Please join us on Friday, November 1 from 5:30 - 8:00pm in Nesbitt Hall Room 125 to celebrate! Register to attend.

Reception made possible through the support of Abbie Dean ’07, Trustee and the Drexel University Office of Alumni Relations.
