A deeply moving chronicle of understanding, forgiveness, and empathy, ONE DAY AFTER PEACE has won numerous prizes at film festivals around the world and was nominated for Best Documentary at the Israel Academy Awards. It follows the emotional journey of Robi Damelin, a South African-born Israeli, who lost her younger son David to a Palestinian sniper’s bullet while he was serving as a sentry in the West Bank. At first Robi wants to speak with her son’s killer, now serving time in an Israeli prison. He refuses, because her son was part of the occupying army denying his people their sovereignty. Undeterred, Robi decides to return to South Africa to see how the country she came from dealt with its own issues of forgiveness and reconciliation after decades of enmity. Through the post-apartheid Truth and Reconciliation Committee (TRC), Robi meets with perpetrators from both sides of the conflict and tries to understand the motivations that brought them to confront their victims and publicly declare their crimes. Robi’s thought-provoking story leads from a place of deep personal pain to a belief that a better future is possible. |
