Community Partnerships to Improve Colorectal Cancer Screening Disparities
Start Date: 11/13/2019Start Time: 12:00 PM
End Date: 11/13/2019End Time: 1:15 PM
Event Description
The department of Health Management and Policy at Dornsife presents Folasade May, MD, PhD, assistant professor of Medicine, University of California.

The presentation will provide specific examples from research regarding colorectal cancer screenings and rates of follow-up in safety-net populations. This research was performed in partnership with several Federally Qualified Health Centers in the Los Angeles area.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in the U.S., but is largely preventable by screening. Non-invasive screening tests are inexpensive and accessible in underserved populations, but warrant follow-up when abnormal. Safety-net populations have the lowest rates of follow-up after abnormal screening for CRC. The goals of this talk are to provide an overview of follow-up after abnormal screening, summarize the available data on barriers to follow-up and present an overview of effective interventions to improve timely follow-up.
