About the Presentation:
The healthcare system is moving from one primary physician who assumes responsibility for each patient to a more team-based approach. Thus assessing team communication is critical. Efforts to improve handovers through enhanced electronic medical record systems and training may need to expand to hospitalists and other attending level physicians.

The talk will discuss work to characterize and assess the quality of physician in-patient handover communications at shift change using the literature-recommended content and language form elements. Quality handovers should contain the following: patient identifiers, active issues, and care plans. They also should include utterances in the following language forms: explanations, rationales, and directives. Research will be presented wherein it was found that out of 106 individual patient handovers across 16 handover sessions, only 39% contained all six of these quality elements. While the majority of the handovers contained five out of six quality elements, only 48% included directives. In addition, the impact of patient factors (new admission, new problem, acuity level) and handover receiver knowledge on the inclusion of quality elements was examined.

About the Presenter:
Ellen J. Bass earned her PhD in Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech. She also holds a MS in Advanced Technology from SUNY at Binghamton as well as both a BS Eng in Bioengineering and a BS Econ in Finance from the University of Pennsylvania. She has held the Link Foundation Fellowship for Advanced Simulation and Training (1995-1996) and the Patricia Roberts Harris fellowship, U. S. Department of Education (1992-1994). Dr. Bass is currently a Professor at The College of Computing & Informatics, College of Nursing and Health Professions, Drexel University and is an Associate Professor at the Department of Systems and Information Engineering, University of Virginia.

Dr. Bass’ research interests include developing theories of human performance along with quantitative methodologies and associated experimental designs that can be used to evaluate total system performance in dynamic, complex systems. The outcomes of this research can be used in the systems engineering process to inform system requirements, procedures, display designs, and training interventions and to support system evaluation.
