“New Mass Spectrometry Approaches for Applications in Clinical Chemistry, Defense, and Forensics”

Nicholas Manicke, PhD, will describe some recent efforts in his group to develop prototype all-in-one cartridges which combine mass spec sample preparation and ionization steps in a single simple device. Mass spectrometry is a powerful analytical platform, but its application to many chemical measurement problems is limited by its complexity and the required expertise. He will describe new mass spectrometry approaches which significantly simplify the use of mass spec identification and quantitation for a wide variety of applications. The problems we’ve addressed with these new methods include detection of emerging synthetic drugs in ER patients, identification of protein isoforms as a tool for developing new clinical diagnostics, and measurement of aerosolized chemical warfare agents.
