Native American Heritage Month
Start Date: 11/1/2014 All Day
End Date: 11/30/2014
Event Description
Heritage/history months and other celebrations provide a forum where we can learn about less spoken histories and add a different perspective to the retelling of our past. Each celebration can incorporate film, cultural celebrations, and speakers to engage our local community in a much needed conversation on the existing realities of particular communities in the U.S. and internationally.

During the month of November the Drexel community observes Native American Heritage Month, which provides an opportunity for the community to acknowledge the painful history Native Americans have endured while recognizing the diversity and wealth our indigenous communities provide to the world's tapestry. What started at the turn of the century as an effort to gain a day of recognition for the significant contributions the first Americans made to the establishment and growth of the US, has resulted in a whole month being designated for that purpose. In 1990 President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 as National American Indian Heritage Month. Similar proclamations, under variants on the name (including Native American Heritage Month and National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month) have been issued each year since 1994.
