Applying the Numbers: Biostatistics and Epidemiology for an Intermediate Audience
Start Date: 3/10/2014Start Time: 9:00 AM
End Date: 3/10/2014End Time: 4:00 PM
Event Description
In many public health departments and community organizations, data expertise is concentrated in a few key staff, while those responsible for using data for planning and decision making lack basic skills and understanding of biostatistics and epidemiology. This full day workshop will be for the public health professional seeking more depth in the application of Biostatistics and Epidemiology in public health practice and research. The presentations will be broken up by group activities where the participants will learn the practical application for the course material.

A course at the beginner level was offered in December 2013 which covered sample and population, common descriptive statistics, graphs and tables, hypothesis testing, measures of disease frequency, and descriptive epidemiology.

This course will build on the information learned in the beginner course. Please review the learning objectives to make sure intermediate is the right level for you.

Learning Objectives
- Explain and interpret confidence intervals.
- Explain how researchers control confounding using multivariate methods and interpret the results of such analyses.
- Indicate how proper sample size is determined and the role of statistical power.
- Explain the design strategies and strengths and weaknesses of case-control and cohort studies.
- Interpret associations and risk while evaluating cause-effect relationships.
- Understand the impact of confounding and bias on study design and conduct the interpretation of results.
