Event Description
On display in the lobby of W. W. Hagerty Library the exhibit The Best of Times features archival materials from the President's Papers showcasing the tenure of former Drexel president William Walsh Hagerty.
On June 2, 1984, President Hagerty gave the address at the 97th commencement of Drexel University. His speech began with a quote from A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens:
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...."
He then went on to say, "If it is both the best of times and the worst of times, then it is our choice as individuals to decide which we are going to experience - good or bad. For most of you, the name Drexel means a community where you experienced a short period of intensive growth and development in your lives. A time of intellectual adventure. For me, Drexel means a very satisfying period of my professional life. And for me, also a great adventure."
William Walsh Hagerty served as president of Drexel University from 1963 - 1984. Beginning his term at the age of 47, Dr. Hagerty brought great enthusiasm and excitement to his role as president. During the 21 years he served, Drexel saw extensive growth, underwent great transformations and thrived under his innovative vision of what a great university and its students could accomplish. This exhibit is comprised of photographs, newspaper clippings, correspondence, brochures, programs and ephemera from the Drexel University Archives. |
