Event Description

Spend your winter break with us! Warm up in Butterflies!, spend some time with our live animals, and visit the roaring, moving dinosaurs in Dinosaurs Unearthed. Celebrate what makes the Academy great with exciting new stage shows, fascinating fossils, hands-on science, and special specimens from our collections.

Tuesday, December 27: Bugs and Butterflies Day

Experience up-close encounters with beetles, cockroaches, and tarantulas as you discover what makes a bug’s life extra special. If the weather outside is frightful, come warm up in the Butterflies! exhibit.

Auditorium Show:  Animals of the Academy
11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Learn all about the animals that call the Academy home and their adaptations, habitats, similarities and differences. Meet some furry, feathery, and scaly Academy ambassadors!

Auditorium Show:  Bugs on the Big Screen
1 p.m.

The bugs are ready for their close-up! Check out some awesome arachnids, magnificent mantids, or cool cockroaches in this technology-enabled live show featuring the cast of the live invertebrate collection of the Academy.

Biomimicry Microscope Cart

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and it also helps a species survive! Learn how invertebrates mimic the world around them, and discover the ways human technology is inspired by insects.

Bugs and Butterflies 101

Meet live invertebrates and talk to the educators who love them. Explore real specimens and learn all about the wild world of bugs.

Get Collected

If you could be an Academy specimen, what would you be? In this activity, choose a Latin name to describe yourself then make yourself a collection tag to take home. Step into the specimen box and take your photo at this unique photo op.

Live Invertebrate Cart: Arachnid Edition

Use cutting-edge technology to explore the miniature world of everyone’s favorite eight-legged invertebrates at this interactive cart featuring live arachnids.

Spider Story Time
2 p.m.

Marty the Moose is back, and this time with a special guest: Octavia the Tarantula! Join the magnificent moose and the adorable arachnid for a special story about how (and why!) spiders are so cool.

Backyard Bugs Container Craft

Decorate a customized catch-and-release container to appreciate nature and gently observe backyard bugs before letting them go.
