Event Description

Spend your winter break with us! Warm up in Butterflies!, spend some time with our live animals, and visit the roaring, moving dinosaurs in Dinosaurs Unearthed. Celebrate what makes the Academy great with exciting new stage shows, fascinating fossils, hands-on science, and special specimens from our collections.

Thursday, December 29: Fur, Feathers, and Scales Day

The live animals of the Academy take center stage on a day all about amazing animals. See firsthand how we take care of our live animals, and learn from the stars of our dioramas.

Auditorium Show: Animals of the Academy
11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Learn all about the animals that call the Academy home and their adaptations, habitats, similarities and differences. Meet some furry, feathery, and scaly Academy ambassadors!

Auditorium Show: Colorful Creatures
1 p.m.

Many animals have special coloration that helps them to blend in or stand out. Check out some live animals that have cool camouflage or crazy colors that help them survive.

Keratin Coverings Microcart

From fur and feathers to claws and nails, all animal coverings are made from the same substance: keratin. Although it comes in many different forms, this extremely interesting and useful protein is found nearly everywhere. Explore some examples, including on your own hands, under the microscope at this interactive tech cart.

Camouflage and Cryptobiosis

From the stripes on a zebra to the spots on a jaguar, animals are the experts when it comes to camouflage. See and touch real specimens and meet the Academy’s experts to discover some of the ways that animals hide in plain sight.

Get Collected

If you could be an Academy specimen, what would you be? In this activity, choose a Latin name to describe yourself then make yourself a collection tag to take home. Step into the specimen box and take your photo at this unique photo op.

Live Reptile Exploration Station

Since local reptiles are hibernating outside now because of the cold, come see our live snakes, turtles, and lizards inside at the Academy! Use cutting-edge technology to explore their miniature world at this interactive cart.

Rat Training Demonstration
2 p.m.

These furry friends are smarter than the average rodent! Observe the Academy’s amazingly intelligent (and adorable!) rats as they show off behaviors taught to them by dedicated animal handlers.

Awesome Animal Mask

What would you like to be today: furry, feathery, or scaly? Make and take an animal mask that matches your mood.
