Hello, My Name Is Jason and I’m a Paleontologist
Take a journey through time, exploring the Devonian, Jurassic, and Cretaceous. This month’s Science on Tap will feature three paleontologists all bearing the same moniker – Jason. Each speaker will share cool research findings, funny anecdotes, and adventures from the field.
About the Speakers:
Jason Downs made the transition from Philadelphia public schools to the University of Pennsylvania where he received BAs in Biology and Geology in 2000. In 2006, he received his Ph.D. in Geology and Geophysics from Yale University, with a paleontological dissertation that addressed the condition of the vertebrate skeleton at the origin of the jaws. After a research post-doctoral position at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia (ANSP) and a visiting professorship at Swarthmore College, Jason is now an assistant professor in the Biology Department at Delaware Valley College. He additionally teaches free adult education courses at the Wagner Free Institute and is a research associate at the ANSP. His current research focuses on the anatomical and ecological contexts of the vertebrate transition to land.
Jason C. Poole is a professor at Drexel University and the Dinosaur Hall Coordinator at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. Jason has excavated dinosaurs on three continents Africa, South and North America. Paralatitan, Dreadnoughtus and Suuwassea are three dinosaurs worked on by Poole which are new to science two of which are supermassive titanosaurs. Jason can often be found in the Academy of Natural Sciences Dinosaur Hall Fossil Lab preparing newly found fossils to spend the rest of their afterlife in collections. Mr. Poole is also a Paleontological Artist who has published in National Geographic and whose art work appears in many museum and privet collections.
Jason Schein is the Assistant Curator of Natural History at the New Jersey State Museum. He has been leading paleontological field expeditions (dinosaur hunting trips!) to the Bighorn Basin of Montana and Wyoming since 2010, and is the co-founder and co-leader of the Bighorn Basin Dinosaur Project. He earned his degrees in Geology at Auburn University before moving to Philadelphia to pursue a PhD in Paleontology at Drexel University.
All Science on Tap events take place at 6pm the second Monday of the month at National Mechanics, 22 S. 3rd St., Philadelphia, PA 19106, unless otherwise stated. Be sure to arrive early to get seats! |
