Abstract: There is a growing interest in wearable displays for applications ranging from medical research and biomedical monitoring to fashion and safety. Current smart fabric materials incorporate discrete components (e.g. sensors, batteries, controller chips) with laminated or knit conducting interconnects. These materials do not retain the full flexibility of the underlying garment, which poses many challenges for its widespread use in textile industries. Ideally, displays would be directly integrated into fabric, which would allow the displays to match the flexibility and comfort of the supporting garment. The goal of a knit display for smart fabrics will be accomplished by developing a novel yarn structure composed of individual coaxial electrospun fibers with a conductive polymer core-electroluminescent polymer shell structure and method of producing this structure. This electroluminescent yarn will then be used to create a 4-pixel emissive display into a knit fabric structure.
