Event Description

On Friday, December 8th at 6pm we will be presenting an artist panel titled What Does it Mean to Be Caribbean?,  a closing event for our Expanded Caribbean: Contemporary Photography at the Crossroads exhibition curated by Susanna W. Gold Ph.D. The panel will feature five Philadelphia area based artists working in the Caribbean primarily in photography: Vincent Dixon (Cuba), John E. Dowell Jr.(Puerto Rico, Costa Rica), Karyn Olivier (Trinidad), Tony Rocco (Colombia) and William E. Williams (Barbados). The panel will be moderated by Trinidadian interdisciplinary artist and Drexel Alumna Farrah Rahaman. This exhibition brings together images that engage the meaning of place in an area with a rich history as a target of exploration and conquest, voluntary and forced migration, trade, travel, and tourism. Responding variously to cultural, historical, mythological, and personal aspects the region, these artists initiate dialogues about how events of the past inform contemporary experience in a continually shifting and evolving environment. This panel discussion will bring the visual conversation to a verbal iteration and will include a Q & A. The event will be free, and is open to all members of the public.

As an additional endorsement, the exhibition was listed in the Philadelphia Inquirer/ by Edith Newhall as one of the 15 top-flight gallery shows to see in Philly this Fall ; the show closes on December 10th, and this is a great opportunity for visitors to see the exhibition before it closes. We hope to see you there.
