Physics Colloquium: Documenting the Natural World: Physics and the Painter's Process
Start Date: 2/20/2014Start Time: 3:30 PM
End Date: 2/20/2014End Time: 4:30 PM
Event Description
Christopher Tietjen, artist, Philadelphia

Christopher Tietjen, a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and a professional artist, discusses the physics applied to his and historic painters' processes. He explores how physics has transformed our understanding of the natural world and therefore our artistic interpretation thereof.

In the pursuit of knowledge and identity, the human mind has the unique ability to consider the mysterious properties and nature of the universe. Driven by innate curiosity and creativity, both the artist and the physicist have developed tools to investigate and a language to communicate their observations and inferences. Developments in science and technology have contributed exciting possibilities and new perspectives to this evaluation. Yet, however complex, the modern questions remain rooted in the same simple queries as those of their predecessors. Art, like physics, is a method of examining existence, the fragments as well as the comprehensive whole, reflecting and informing the human experience.
