HPOL Colloquium: "Learning Empire from the Americans"
Start Date: 2/11/2014Start Time: 3:30 PM
End Date: 2/11/2014End Time: 5:00 PM

Event Description
John Tresch, PhD, associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania

In the early 1830s, two young Frenchmen separately toured the United States, a country still in infancy. But while de Tocqueville defined the United States by its virtuous farmers and small town democracy, Michel Chevalier's Letters on North America revealed the coordinated creation of a vast commercial and technical infrastructure. John Tresch, PhD, will discuss his work on this "Tocqueville of Technology," which introduced his readers to a new mode of imperial power, grounded in relentless industry and exclusionary liberalism, preparing to redefine the continent and the globe.
