Preserving the past and rebuilding the future of Afghanistan

Event Description
Archaeologist Dr. Laura Tedesco, the Cultural Heritage Program’s Manager for the U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan, will join Museum Leadership Prof. Derek Gillman, Art & Art History Prof. Pia Brancaccio, and University of Pennsylvania South Asian Art Prof. Michael Meister for a panel discussing the efforts and challenges of protecting Afghanistan’s artistic heritage. Dr. Tedesco will present recent archaeological work conducted at the Buddhist site of Mes Anyak and the early Islamic monuments at Ghazni, as well as activities at the Kabul Museum. Our distinguished panelists will address the future of cultural heritage in unstable political environments and will touch on issues surrounding the preservation of the Salt Range Temples in Pakistan.

This free-to-the-public event, co-sponsored by the South Asia Center of the University of Pennsylvania, will take place on Monday, Feb. 17 at 5 p.m. in the URBN Annex Screening Room (3401 Filbert St. Philadelphia), followed by a 6 p.m. reception and presentation of an exhibit of photographs by Jaroslav Poncar, titled “Preserving the past and rebuilding the future: The artistic heritage of Afghanistan” in the URBN Annex Lobby.
